Publication and Acknowledgment

The Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) provides the wider research community with state-of-the-art instrumentation and expertise, which not only adds to, but also improves research outputs and funding bids. It is thus important to recognize the contributions of facility staff to the advancement of scientific research, both formally and informally, in all instances of technical assistance. The type of recognition that is most appropriate will vary dependent upon the contribution provided.

The following describes when acknowledgment of FGCZ contributions and FGCZ co-authorship is appropriate in publications.

Separate scientific from financial contribution

The Functional Genomics Center Zurich must charge for services rendered according to the institutional policies of ETH Zurich and University of Zurich. Besides state-of-the-art instrumentation, core facilities employ highly skilled and experienced individuals who can make complex experiments possible, and provide essential support in very specialized technologies, often with an intellectual contribution to the project. Charging for services and support helps to raise awareness of the financial resources invested in a project but does not preclude authorship on manuscripts where justified.

Acknowledgment of scientific and technical support by the FGCZ

The Functional Genomics Center Zurich must be acknowledged in all publications including results generated at the FGCZ. The names of FGCZ staff members who provided support should be specified when possible. Examples of acknowledgments:
"(Genomics / Proteomics / Metabolomics / Biophysics) was performed at the Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) of University of Zurich and ETH Zurich".
"The authors gratefully acknowledge the Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) of University of Zurich and ETH Zurich, and in particular XXX, for the support on (Genomics / Proteomics / Metabolomics / Biophysics) analyses”.
"(Genomics / Proteomics / Metabolomics / Biophysics) was performed with the support of the Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) of University of Zurich and ETH Zurich ".

Co-authorship

Scientific contributions of FGCZ staff during the conceptual phase of the project, the generation of experimental data, or data evaluation and interpretation shall be acknowledged by including the FGCZ staff as co-author of resulting publications and reports, according to common standards for good scientific practice. This will ensure the correct interpretation and description of data generated at the FGCZ, and identify correctly the responsible individual.
